"You know, it's offical. I'm surrounded by idiots with death wishes."

Nathaniel often displays himself as a happy child, playful, and very fun loving. He appears to be the type of kid who hasn't had everything, but doesn't let life bring him down. He's soft spoken, with a kind of meek awe that charms hearts. He smiles often, always the same knowing smile when he talks to strangers/acquaintances and the same love-laced one when he interacts with his family. He's incredibly intelligent and knows that he's probably the smartest person in the room when around peers or even adults.
On the surface, he's just a kid big into comic books and computer games, well educated in science and biology, and an overall peppy person. Yet, as seen with Matrix, Nathaniel's alter ego, there's a simmering anger and internal suffering to him that he tries to hide. The mask helps channel his emotional frustration into something productive. The truth is, he houses a lot of anger and frustration with his life and the people in it. Compared to his brothers, Nathaniel looks sickly; with pale white skin that speaks of hours without sun and a skinny form instead of filled out figure. His blue eyes are ringed with dark bags. His fingers are always moving, either typing or writing down something. Even without a computer in hand, one can catch the ticks and the subtle taps of Nathaniel's fingers against a flat surface. Matrix seems to be fairly harmless incapable of the physical violence of his siblings or father. Yet, he may be the most deadly of the vigilante team. He is an unrivaled hacker with an astounding knowledge of computers and systems since he grew up with laptops and LAN networks. As a result, he is a much more cerebral, cautious vigilante than his family, the thinking man's member if you will. He takes after Johnathan in this way much more than Trip or Ashton - Nathaniel is a natural planner, almost to the point of being a manipulator, and definitely has no qualms about manipulating criminals to set up a successful sting with as little violence as possible. Nathaniel is also a natural detective - arguably the best detective among the family. As Matrix, Nathaniel is a crime-solver by nature, as opposed to Phoenix and Venger who are both crime-busters, far more rash and willing to crack skulls than he is. Nathaniel further distances himself from his family with his personality. Whereas Trip’s primary trait is his carefree nature and Ashton's his anger, Nathaniel's primary character trait his driven-ness. He's not overconfident - quite the opposite. Nathaniel still has a lot of self-doubt about whether or not he can fill a hero's shoes. Instead, he is always devoted to following through with whatever he is doing and has an almost obsessive work ethic. He's pretty much a loner, which arguably makes him a better match-up with Johnathan than man's previous children. Indeed, Nathaniel exhibits a certain social awkwardness in his civilian life, having spent his childhood around computers and books and not so much around people. His loyalty to Johnathan is based upon knowing the man's intelligence, capabilities and his mission, Matrix follows strictly to this mission and has no problem reminding others on the team what it is they're trying to accomplish. Many may think he blindly follows Johnathan, but this is strictly in the presence of others. Only members of the family have witnessed Matrix's disagreement with Reckoning's methods from time to time. Nathaniel's learned a lot in his years as Matrix and is not full of the childlike enthusiasm that he exhibited in his early years. He's maturing, coming into his own as a hero, and developing a style and manner not unlike the man he plays squire to. He has become more serious and careful in recent years, with a tendency for planning that borders on fatalism. Nevertheless, Nathaniel himself is not a pessimist, and unlike Johnathan his soul is not consumed by the need for vengeance. He's coming into his own as a man, and where the process will lead him is anyone's guess. |

- Would survive on nothing but instant ramen and coffee if given the chance
- LOVES COFFEE - Isn't an insomniac, just drinks too much caffeine to sleep properly - never sleeps - a workaholic - tech genius - all around genius - socially awkward - very skinny - He puts up with movie night because Trip likes it, and suggests a bunch of scary horror films just to see if Malcolm will scream - has alot of pent up guilt about not being able to do field work with the others - besides Trip he's the only one of the family who is on okay standing with everyone else (ie, he doesn't get attacked immediately) - favorite color is purple/lavender colors - like classical music - wishes he had learned how to play an instrument - loves sci-fi - watches Star Trek with Trip - one of those people who enjoys both Star Trek and Star Wars - can fall asleep any where and everywhere - his favorite thing would have to be hands down, BBC Sherlock - favorite food would be ramen (like any ramen, the real stuff the instant stuff the kind that he makes when on his fourth day of no sleep that's basically water) - considers himself the one sane one in the family (and it is 100% contested) - besides field work he isn't bitter that he's wheelchair bound - his hair is in a constant state of distress - has a habit of tapping his fingers all the time, sometimes its in Morse - one of those people who actually eats garnishes - one of those milk first people (and his whole family berates him for it) - unlike Ashton he hates studying/school and finds it tedious - a pro at Foosball - very very messy |
The fourth child of Jonathan Rowland was never a Vigil at all, however he shares the same history of childhood hardship.
Nathaniel Larsonn never knew his parents and the civil service members told him that they didn't know either. He was left at the doorstep of a Vlostock's city orphanage when he was less than a month old with a message tied to his arm - “Nate Larsonn.” There was no record of him ever being born, nor were there any people with the last name of Larsonn even located in the city. So as obligated they kept him and raised him with minimal amounts of care. Nathaniel stayed at the orphanage, his chances of adoption, already pitifully low, were lowered further still by the fact that he was, from birth, paralyzed from the waist down. He grew into a skittish young boy, skinny and socially awkward, but with a stunning intellect. He got his hands on his first computer from one of the orphanage volunteers, at age seven she felt sorry for him. He spent months tinkering with the old hardware, taking it apart and putting it back together. Nathaniel was enamored with the object and he soon became obsessed with numbers and the inner workings of all things computer related. He loved hacking and surveillance, he loved the thrill of cracking firewalls. The numbers became his friends and safety net. Confined to a wheelchair, they became his way to escape. Soon he could get into almost anything. He was a man without a mission however, there really wasn’t a pressing need for his skill set. Maybe when he was older he could perhaps earn a scholarship and make something of his peculiar way with digits. It was then that he stumbled upon an interesting frequency, unlike that of most of the city it was well guarded. Nathaniel’s natural curiosity pricked at him, the police didn’t even guard their coms! He spent hours tirelessly trying to the crack the code. Every so often he would make some progress, like a slow drip trying to fill a dam. Eventually he cracked it, and found all his efforts rewarded. Vlostock’s resident vigilanties! He spent days listening to their feeds, how they spoke and synchronised with one another. Unlike the other children, Nathaniel hadn’t ever been interested the vigilanties but now it was all he concerned himself with. There of course was Reckoning, the leader and father of the group, who Nathaniel wasn't too sure was the children's actually father. There was Euchre, Reckoning’s first Vigil who seemed like the big brother of the group, he was certainly the oldest child. And the Vigil - a girl about three years older than him, who had to be new. Not long before there had been another Vigil, a boy (too young to be Euchre), Nathaniel wondered what happened to him. He loved them and spent night after night listening to them talk with one another. After a time he felt like he knew them, and they became the family he never had. Euchre liked the snow, but loved the rain. Reckoning loved them all like children even though he never showed it. Vigil was learning how to be normal, because her mother had apparently been a psychopath. So Nathaniel formulated a new goal, to meet these people he had come to adore. It wasn’t hard, in all actuality, he simply had to find their Base. It was impossible for them to orchestrate such a coordinated effort without quick access to the whole city, thus they must have another means of traveling besides the streets. With a little digging, Nathaniel discovered the cities’ underground tunnels and spent day after day wandering them until he came upon a place that could only be the Reckoning family Base. All that was left was to wait. He could hardly contain his excitement when they entered the underground room. In a rush he explained to them what had occurred and how he could/wanted to help. With little other option, Jonathan allowed him to stay. He was eleven years old. From that point in he was part of a family, albeit a brooding one. He worked out of Base with the codename Matrix: handling all the tactical plans, missions, and directed the family over ear pieces. There was no information that were protected from Reckoning’s fingertips with Matrix at his side. Nathaniel integrated into the family well, even when Ashton returned, and was apprehensive when Malcolm joined them. The boy’s relationship wasn’t as strong as Nathaniel would have liked, but he didn't have time to dwell on it, before the city went to hell. Reckoning was dead. |
Jonathan Rowland AKA “Reckoning” - “ I know you loved us, but I also think you were wrong to treat Aston the way you did. You were a good hero and the whole city mourns your loss, but that doesn't make you a saint. Or erase all of your sins.” Nathaniel is conflicted about his father figure. He thinks the man was a good person that made bad decisions but also knows the hardships Jonathan bestowed on his family. There is a hard love between them.
Howard “Trip” Lawrence the third AKA “Euchre” - “Trip is my big brother, adoption or blood it doesn't matter. I love him, he loves me we're all good.” Trip and Nathaniel are brothers, they love each other and they both know it. Trip can always count on Nathaniel's unwavering support as well as his intellect while Nathaniel counts on Trip to keep him socially active and to distract him from his work. These two get along the best in the family and rarely have disagreements that can't be easily solved. Ashton Charles Wilson AKA “Venger” - “Ashton’s angry, and rightfully so. He's fiercely protective of us and I can't imagine what he's gone through. I want him to know that he'll never lose us, and that we'll never cast him away.” There is a mutual understanding between them. Nathaniel understands Ashton's need to have a stable family, it is something he longs for as well, so the two brothers are able to accept one another. There is a want on Nathaniel's part to help Ashton understand that he is not alone and that he is wanted and needed. Rosetta Reynolds AKA “Phoenix” - “She's deadly. Hardly sticks to my plans, but she's not a fool. I wish she showed a little more emotion around us, but I know she loves us all the same. ” The two respect on another. They both know they're good at their respective jobs and are fiercely protective of each other. Both Rosetta and Nathaniel can have civil conversations with each other easily. It's not uncommon to see the two passed out on the couch together or painting each other's nails. Malcolm Rowland AKA “Vigil” - “Malcolm is a puzzle. He's like all of us combined. Jon's skill, Trip's sarcasm, Ashton's rage, Rosetta's mindset, and my intellect don't really make that great of a person. He's a puzzle, and I'm a little uncertain about how he feels about me, but I know I love him.” The youngest member of the family, Nathaniel doesn't really have a good grasp on. He doesn't understand what makes the boy tick, and despite being the closest in age the two don't really bond all that well. Nevertheless they love each other, well Nathaniel loves Malcolm while Malcolm, well he's still a little undecided. |
MATRIX - Matrix is quite simply a code name, as Nate stays at Base and directs missions. He is unable to do field work, other than the occasional stake out.
At Base he helps to direct missions, relay information, and generally keep things from going to hell. He plans most of the missions and is the second best - if not the best - detective the group has. In the public eye, Matrix is the least known. The press has only his code name and has no idea that there's only one Matrix to the team. He never the less is hands down the most important aspect of the family's fight against crime. An unsung hero as it were. |
